Top five little touches in console games

Sep 10th, 2008 | By Dan | Category: Feature

When playing Mass Effect, you had the option of going to a series of random planets and preforming side missions. These missions were never of the quality of the main missions (either in story, visual fidelity, level design or gameplay ingenuity), yet they gave the game world a sense of bredth and depth that the core game levels did not provide. They were essentially the matte painting behind a movie set changing what you see from a sound stage to an amazing vista.... Keep Reading

Spending Money on Time

Sep 4th, 2008 | By Dan | Category: Editorial

A few months ago I played the game Protector on Kongregate for about ten hours over the course of a couple weeks. It wasn’t a perfect game, but it was fairly polished and I enjoyed progressing through it. Around the same time I paid $60 for a copy of Grand Thief Auto 4 and played it for about the same amount of time.... Keep Reading

Too Human … Not so bad!

Aug 29th, 2008 | By Dan | Category: Editorial, Xbox 360

As far as I can tell all of my Great White Delight compatriots have been scared away from Too Human by the bad review scores. I, however, decided to help out a fellow GTAer (yes I feel that everything in the golden horseshoe is in the GTA, deal with it) and buy Denis’s game.... Keep Reading

The Top Five singular visions in videogaming

Aug 21st, 2008 | By Dan | Category: Editorial, PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360

Here is a top five list of singular visions in videogaming. Each of these games had a creator behind them that pushed a singular vision that defied genres and focus testing and ended with something specifically unique. Each of these games also had to be commercial enough to be released by a major publisher on and be available to a wide audience.... Keep Reading

Changing Mindsets: Understanding Halo’s pay structure

Aug 14th, 2008 | By Dan | Category: Editorial, Xbox 360

On the surface it may seem that online play for Halo 3 is covered by paying the Xbox Live Gold fee. This is in fact not true. Halo 3 essentially has a monthly fee of about $2.50 payed out in quarterly installments of 800 Microsoft spacebucks. Microsoft just really doesn’t want you to think of it that way.... I’d rather be playing my PS3

Aug 7th, 2008 | By Dan | Category: Editorial, Playstation 3, Xbox 360

From top to bottom the PS3 is simply a nicer system to use than the Xbox 360. It boots up faster (almost three times as fast as far as I can tell). The UI makes far more sense, has more options, and doesn’t waste large swathes of screen real estate on …

Who cares if there aren’t any good retail games this month

Jul 31st, 2008 | By Dan | Category: Playstation 3, Preview, Xbox 360

As was briefly mentioned in the news section, there are a lot of great downloadable games coming out in the next month. I really dig what games of a more limited scope (and price tag) lend to the game space. Hell, when making up my top five at the end of the year, I’ll be shocked if PixelJunk Monsters isn’t in there. And in the next month almost all of the top tier downloadable games that have gotten press in the last year (or more) are finally coming out.... Keep Reading

Starter Guide: Games on the PSN

Jul 24th, 2008 | By Dan | Category: Editorial, Playstation 3

The common perception is that the downloadable offerings on the Playstation Network aren’t as robust as those offered on either Xbox Live Arcade or Nintendo’s Virtual Console/Wii Ware. While it is true that there aren’t as many games on the PSN, the ones that are there are often creative, exquisitely produced and replayably fun. Here [...]

The Second Coming of Kongregate

In late March, spurred on by an off-handed mention on 1up Yours, I decided to give the social gaming site Kongregate a try …

Hands On: Too Human Demo

Today I downloaded the Too Human demo that hit Xbox live as E3 started. I played for about 45 mins and here are my very brief impressions.
